How We Test Espresso Machines
Every machine reviewed on EspressoRadar is used as our daily driver for at least two weeks before we write a word. No loaner units rushed back to the brand, no verdicts from a spec sheet.
What we measure
- Shot consistency — back-to-back doubles with the same dose and grind, checking for drift.
- Heat-up time and temperature stability — from cold start to first acceptable shot.
- Milk performance — microfoam quality and how long steaming takes, on whole and oat milk.
- Noise and footprint — because the machine lives on your counter, not in a lab.
- Cleanup — daily maintenance time, and how easy descaling actually is.
How ratings work
Ratings run 1–5 in half-point steps and are relative to price bracket: a 4.5 budget machine is not claiming to outbrew a 4.0 prosumer machine — it is excelling at its own job.
What we don't do
- No sponsored placements or paid rankings.
- No review copy approval for brands.
- No invented lab figures — if we didn't measure it, we don't state it.
